The wildlife expert and Zoo Miami ambassador will sail the World Traveller to Antarctica and the Falklands in 2027, cameras and all.
Atlas Ocean Voyages has recruited a heavyweight for one of its polar sailings: renowned wildlife expert, conservationist and photographer Ron Magill will join guests aboard the World Traveller for a 16-night expedition to Antarctica and the Falkland Islands, departing Ushuaia, Argentina, on March 13, 2027.
Magill is a familiar face to anyone who has spent time with a nature documentary. He has logged more than 45 years in wildlife conservation, education and photography as Goodwill Ambassador for the Zoo Miami Foundation, a Nikon USA Ambassador and host of the television series Mundo Salvaje con Ron Magill, picking up six Emmy Awards along the way. His work has carried him across Africa, Asia, the Americas and the polar regions.
On board, that experience translates into a genuine enrichment programme rather than a guest-of-honour cameo. Magill will lead presentations on Antarctic wildlife and conservation, run photography workshops drawing on his decades behind a Nikon, and – conditions permitting – accompany select Zodiac cruises and shore landings, where the real value of having a naturalist at your elbow tends to reveal itself.
The itinerary is the draw in its own right. From Ushuaia, the World Traveller crosses the Drake Passage to reach Antarctica’s glaciers, tabular icebergs and bays thick with penguins, seals and whales, with daily Zodiac safaris and guided landings led by the ship’s expedition team. The voyage also calls at the Falkland Islands – home to five species of penguin, dramatic coastlines and a handful of far-flung settlements – for a sharp contrast to the ice.
It helps that the World Traveller is small, carrying fewer than 200 guests, which is what makes the close-quarters access to someone like Magill plausible in the first place.
