The listening lounge has become one of hospitality’s most distinctive trends, with hotels carving out spaces where music shifts from background noise to the main event. Some properties go further, building entire suites, wings or even musical directorships around the theme. Here are eight, spread across four continents, worth booking for the sound alone.
Aria Hotel Budapest, Hungary
Music runs through every inch of Aria Hotel Budapest, starting with the piano-keyboard marble inlay across its indoor courtyard. Rooms are divided into four wings, Classical, Opera, Contemporary and Jazz, each finished with details that nod to its genre, and the hotel keeps a musical director on staff to arrange live performances and curate soundtracks for guests. Hard Days Night Hotel, Liverpool, England
There’s no mystery to the theme here: the Hard Days Night Hotel is the world’s only hotel dedicated entirely to the Beatles, set in a Grade II-listed building in the city’s Beatles Quarter, next door to the original Cavern Club where the band got its start. Beatles-inspired artwork fills all 110 rooms, making it a natural base for a Liverpool music pilgrimage.
W Nashville, Tennessee
Nashville doesn’t do subtlety when it comes to music, and W Nashville leans into it with the Sound Room, a small venue tucked behind a wall of speakers that hosts listening sessions and songwriting collaborations for established and emerging artists alike. The Living Room Bar & Lounge keeps live music going most nights, and the concierge fields regular requests for tickets to the Grand Ole Opry or the Ryman.
Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, Texas
Named for the patron saint of music, this Victorian-era mansion turned hotel is a favourite with touring musicians and record label types. Rooms at Hotel Saint Cecilia come with Rega turntables and Geneva sound systems, and guests can borrow vintage vinyl and rock biographies from the hotel’s own lending library.
Central Station Memphis, Tennessee
Set inside Memphis’s former train station, Central Station channels the city’s music heritage throughout, right down to a lobby wall built entirely from stereo speakers. Guests can request the Stax Suite, a bi-level room filled with Stax Records memorabilia and its own turntable, while the hotel’s Eight & Sand lounge hosts DJs spinning vinyl into the evening.
Hotel El Ganzo, San José del Cabo, Mexico
This boutique property built its identity around a Musicians in Residence program that has brought acts including Thievery Corporation and Khruangbin through its Underground Studio and private marina stage. Murals and one-of-a-kind artwork fill the rooms at Hotel El Ganzo, and impromptu performances have a way of turning up in unexpected corners of the property.
Okupa Athens, Greece
Anchored by its Kitchen & Listening Bar, Okupa treats music as a constant rather than background noise, with rooms stocked with portable speakers and, in some cases, record players. The all-day space moves from brunch to dinner to DJ sets over the course of a day, giving guests in central Athens easy access to the sound.
The Drake Hotel, Toronto, Canada
Music has been part of The Drake Hotel‘s DNA since it reopened as a boutique property in 2004, thanks to the Drake Underground, a 200-capacity venue in the basement that has hosted early sets from M.I.A., Billie Eilish and Beck before they broke wide. The room still leans indie, booking touring acts, DJs and local talent most nights of the week, often with no cover.
