Virtuoso identifies seven of the most popular luxury travel trends

Virtuoso has partnered with travel trend forecasting agency, Globetrender, to unveil the Luxury Travel Trend Watch: 2025.

Working with global data from Virtuoso’s 2024 Brand & Travel Tracker Survey – a global survey of its high-net-worth/ultra-high-net-worth clientele – Globetrender and Virtuoso have identified seven trends shaping the luxury travel landscape for 2025.

Silver bullet wellness

Wellness tourism, projected to grow 16.6 percent annually and reach $2.1 trillion by 2027 (Global Wellness Institute), is seeing the rise of “Silver Bullet Wellness,” which provides personalized health habits and longevity plans. Luxury travellers are now seeking treatments for issues like insomnia, cognitive decline and disease prevention, moving beyond traditional pampering treatments to life-extension programs.

Switzerland, Spain, Germany and Thailand are among the countries leading the charge, with high-net-worth travellers increasingly favouring retreats offering intensive, tailored mind-body transformations. With one in eight Virtuoso clients traveling for wellness, demand for specialized treatments is soaring.

F**k it lists

The term “bucket list” has long dominated the travel landscape, but now, the focus has shifted to spontaneous, short-term experiences, reflecting a “carpe diem” mindset. In 2025 and beyond, travellers are embracing “F**k-It Lists” – spontaneous, fun and liberating adventures that prioritise living in the moment.

As the affluent continue to favour experiences over luxury goods, this trend is fuelling splurges on more extravagant modes of travel like yacht charters, first-class flights and private jets. “F**k-It Lists” also serve to push travellers out of their comfort zones, focusing on personal fulfilment rather than conventional tourist spots.

Moodboarding

When planning a trip, most people think of the destinations and activities, often overlooking how they want to feel. Many seek relaxation but find themselves still thinking about work by the pool. In reality, an itinerary involving physical activities like hiking may better help disconnect from professional stress. As travel designers ask the right questions to tap into clients’ true motivations, they can address deeper emotional needs, giving rise to the “Mood Boarding” trend in pre-trip consultations.

Virtuoso believes luxury travel advisors should help clients distinguish between “wants” and “needs,” curating experiences that offer emotional nourishment. For instance, a candlelit beach dinner may be less about the event itself and more about fostering connection or forgiveness between partners.

XZ beta travel

By 2025, seven generations will be travelling together for the first time in history, as “Beta Babies” are born to Gen Z parents (aged 16-30). This includes Generation Alpha (aged 1-15 in 2025), Millennials, Gen X, Boomers and the Matures. A key trend, “XZ Beta Travel,” will see young Gen Z parents traveling with their children and Gen X grandparents, who often finance the trips.

Gen Z, with 2 billion people and expected to represent 27 percent of the global workforce by 2025, is a growing and aspirational consumer group. McKinsey reports that 35 percent of the luxury travel market consists of “aspiring” travellers with net worths between $100,000 and $1 million, typically under 40 and increasingly from Asia.

This demographic drives over a third of the $239 billion luxury travel market. The challenge is catering to this new group of young parents, who often find inspiration on TikTok (60 percent of users are Gen Z). While many Gen Zs are delaying or opting out of parenthood, even a small percentage having children will still amount to millions, and hotels are adapting.

Wander women

The rise of independent travel among women is set to grow in 2025 and beyond, with more women of all ages opting for solo, adventurous trips. Travel providers are responding by offering tailored experiences to cater to this trend, dubbed “Wander Women.” According to Virtuoso, 71 per cent of its solo travellers are women, with 47 percent of them divorced, separated or widowed, highlighting a surge in post-partner or family-raising travel.

AmaWaterways removed single supplements for solo travelers on select European river cruises in 2024, while Swiss travel network A Small World launched the Solo Cruise Company, targeting women 55+. In small group travel, Intrepid Travel will debut its first women-only trips to Saudi Arabia in November 2024, in partnership with a local female-owned operator. Experiences include visiting Saudi women’s homes and female-only beaches.

Meanwhile, startups like Mom’z offer “babymoons” in Spain for pregnant women, and the Amilla Maldives hosted a “mid-life wellbeing” retreat for perimenopausal and menopausal women in 2024. Luxury providers are finding niches in solo female travel, focusing on personal connections, unique experiences and women’s specific needs.

Memoirs in motion

The trend “Memoirs in Motion” involves luxury travellers hiring professional film crews to document their travels, turning holidays into cinematic experiences and personal legacies.

Unlike the “Set-Jetting” trend, which focuses on visiting movie locations, this new trend lets clients star in their own documentaries, reflecting the growing demand for personalised storytelling and memory preservation.

Racketeering

The trend of “Racketeering,” coined by Globetrender, reflects the growing popularity of racket sports like tennis, pickleball and padel during vacations, spurred by the 2024 film “Challengers.”

Companies like Pickleball in Paradise now organise racket sport-themed vacations. Resorts worldwide are capitalising on this trend by adding state-of-the-art courts, clinics and tournaments. Notable destinations include Marbella Club, the birthplace of padel in Europe, and Necker Island, where Richard Branson hosts the exclusive Necker Cup tennis tournament. His Moskito Island estate also offers tennis facilities.

Luxury resorts like Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in France, in partnership with Lacoste, have embraced this trend with branded tennis courts and a limited-edition tennis apparel collection. Meanwhile, the Maldives’ Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani resorts added padel courts, hosting pro players through the “Soneva Stars” program.  Other destinations like One&Only Aesthesis in Greece, Bürgenstock Resort in Switzerland, and Le Grand Bellevue Switzerland have also embraced racket sports. Even cruise lines, such as Crystal Cruises, now offer onboard pickleball and padel courts on their ships.

Virtuoso reveals new luxury trends, from hot destinations to coolcations

Virtuoso has drawn upon its extensive network of travel advisors, preferred partners and high-net-worth/ultra-high-net-worth clientele to determine what’s new and next in luxury travel, while also revealing the data and insights that prove it.

Respected as the leading “Voice of Luxury” and industry trend forecaster, Virtuoso has based its findings on a data warehouse of (US) $80 billion in transactions and an ongoing series of surveys.

The results of the extensive research were shared at the 366h annual Virtuoso Travel Week, taking place Aug. 10-16, in Las Vegas at Bellagio Resort & Casino, ARIA Resort & Casino, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas and Vdara Hotel & Spa.

The key takeaway is that travel remains robust, even against a backdrop of global challenges. Year-to-date sales have surpassed those of 2023 for the same January-June timeframe by 14 per cent and skyrocketed 211 per cent over 2019, with future 2025-2026 sales already up 38 per cent over last year. The demand for travel advisors remains high, with a 76 percent increase in consumers seeking out travel advisors so far this year via the network’s site, virtuoso.com.

Adventures far and wide

While domestic travel dominates in fall 2024, travellers are venturing afar in record numbers, with Italy, France, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Spain, Saint Barthelemy, Portugal, Canada and Japan topping the list.

The largest growth areas year-over-year are Canada (+168 per cent), Japan (+160 per cent) and Saint Barthelemy (+155 per cent).

Major cities like Paris, London, New York, Rome and Tokyo are showing significant increases compared to 2023, while destinations such as Taormina (Sicily), Napa and Amsterdam are seeing rate declines, making this fall a great time to visit.

For the festive season, Mexico, Hawaii, Anguilla, Costa Rica and Saint Barthelemy are the most sought-after destinations, with Saint Lucia, the Dominican Republic and Grenada coming on strong with double- and triple-digit percentage increases.

Notably, Maui is up 66 percent for the holidays compared to last year. Fall and festive season bookings are expected to be strong, with fall bookings up 23 per cent and festive season bookings up 32 per cent compared to 2023. Additionally, Virtuoso’s preferred hotels are seeing rate increases of 46 per cent in the Caribbean and eight percent in Mexico.

Exclusive experiences remain hot

When it comes to the hottest travel trends, Virtuoso advisors have noted continued demand for exclusive-use experiences such as VIP transportation, luxury yachts and private residences, along with itineraries that incorporate next-level stimulation and engagement.

Requests for these exceptionally high-end experiences have increased for 89 per cent of Virtuoso advisors.

Leading trends in ultraluxe travel include expedition cruises, exotic destinations (such as Fiji, the Maldives and Thailand) and African safaris. Top motivations for ultraluxe travel are celebrations, passion-point experiences (like sports, arts, culture, concerts and festivals) and once-in-a-lifetime trips.

A focus on feelings

Of particular interest is a notable shift from focusing on a trip to-do list to an emphasis on how one feels during travel.

Virtuoso’s research has identified that travellers prioritize curiosity and exploration (77 per cent), joy and happiness (65 per cent) and awe and wonder of nature (57 percent) as the top emotional drivers for luxury travellers. The intangibles of a travel experience are more compelling than checking off bucket list items.

"Coolcations" heat up

Other trends include a rise in travel to cooler climates, or “Coolcations,” to destinations in northern Europe and Canada, which are up 44 percent this summer, while visits to warmer spots, including Italy, Greece and France, have decreased by .5 per cent.

Wellness travel is also expected to be a major trend this year and into the next, with a focus on “Silver Bullet” wellness – a sub-trend coined by Globetrender in a forthcoming co-authored report with Virtuoso – highlighting hyper-specific, targeted “cures” tailored to individual wellness needs.

A survey revealed that 70 per cent of travellers are seeking relaxation and disconnection through wellness travel, while half are interested in hyper-personalized experiences and mental resets.

Other key trends

Solo female travel, dubbed as “Wander Women” by Virtuoso and Globetrender, has also seen significant growth, with women making up 71 percent of solo travellers.

Additionally, as Gen Z begins having children in 2025 (Beta babies), the industry for the first time will see seven generations traveling simultaneously. Legacy travel, or the act of bringing all these generations together to celebrate milestones or to seek nostalgia and reconnection (24 percent according to the 2024 Virtuoso Brand & Travel Tracker study) is becoming increasingly popular. And Virtuoso shared that when surveyed, 32 percent of Gen Zs were planning to travel with children over the next year, with 42 per cent of them planning to do so under the guidance of a travel advisor.

Travel to off-the-beaten-path destinations and at off-peak times is growing in popularity, aligning with the trend toward more responsible and sustainable travel as a response to overtourism.

Five trends upscale travellers are embracing for 2024

Global travel agency network Virtuoso says that its clients are prioritizing travel, despite inflation and global unrest. They remain insatiably curious and willing to pay for new experiences.

These findings come from the company’s 2024 Virtuoso Luxe Report, which included input from 2,000 travel advisors who shared their extensive knowledge, professional experience and client requests to offer insight into 2024’s top trends.

Five luxury travel trends

The Luxe Report identified five key trends upscale globetrotters are embracing in 2024.

New places

While preference for European favorites remains, the desire to visit dream destinations, under-the-radar locations or the drive to be “first” to a destination, has luxury travellers increasingly intrigued by the unexplored. The cultural richness of reemerging travel must-sees such as Japan offer unique itineraries for those seeking a departure from the norm.

Time to celebrate

Post-pandemic festivities continue with celebration travel making the list of top trends for 2024. Travellers are committed to sharing life’s most important moments with loved ones – travel with immediate family and multigenerational travel are also among the top trends.

Respecting the plant

Travellers are hyper-aware of the fragility of the world. Virtuoso advisors say clients are pushing geographical boundaries to witness nature in its pristine form for fear it will diminish or become inaccessible.

Greece, Morocco and Hawaii are also top-of-mind for travelers who want to support destinations recently impacted by disaster while remaining respectful of their recovery.

Small ship cruising

Favouring less-crowded, more intimate settings, small-vessel cruising is on the rise. River cruises remain popular for the casual atmosphere, proximity to major cities and wide-ranging itineraries.

Popular routes include the Danube River, Mekong River and the Nile. Adventure cruising is also trending due to increased accessibility to places like Antarctica, 2024’s leading adventure destination. And yacht charters are on the rise, offering privacy, flexibility and a customized experience.

Custom comfort

Increased demand for custom trips made easy, from exclusive-use experiences to booking half days at hotels to fit their needs, has today’s traveller maximizing comfort. Their desire to leave nothing to chance has increased motivation for using a professional travel advisor to simplify bookings and enhance the overall experience.
